The Victorian Day Of The Volkswagen is one of those gatherings where one's absence will always be noted and one's presence deeply appreciated. Each show that I attend always exhibits a distinct atmosphere or 'flavour', and over the years of attending the Vic DOVW, southern VW enthusiasts have an unwritten 'build' culture to design their Volkswagens for a slow, leisurely Sunday cruise, usually within a couple of hours radius of the CBD, and never too far from a good drop. At Yarra Glen Race Course, where the Volkswagen Club Of Victoria proudly calls home to their annual show, obligatory picnic rugs form a carpet between the classic cars nestled under the shade or spread like a sea across the grass near the main track. In line with the cruise oath, and the mild weather, the DOVW slowly comes alive and is usually 'pumping' at a very respectable mid-morning hour. Traders are especially thankful for the casual start - more time to slip in a coffee!
